I take photographs, not pictures. I seek a revolution in how my audience perceives their world. In my most recent body of work “Stealth Tower Project”, I remind my audience of the ways that corporate marketing entities train us to filter out information and disguise what they want us to see. I search for photographic compositions that remind my viewers of the blinders placed before their eyes.
I see photography as a tool to reinvent how we see the world. I’ve succeeded in my work when my audience recognizes something that has been in front of their eyes the whole time. I look for a way to juxtapose the incongruity of human intention with the humor of what actually happens. I want to force my viewer to stop and really LOOK—to see the subtle joke demonstrated in my photographs.
I spend a lot of time driving, searching out the perfect urban landscapes to mark the irony of the everyday world we live in. I’m fascinated by the everyday cleverness concealed in the cityscape panorama—cell phone towers disguised as palm trees, church towers, and cactus hidden in the midst of the mundane world. I’m intrigued by this attempt to disguise, dupe, or trick the viewer. I feel like a hunter when I shoot, stalking my prey, seeking out the patterns and textures inherent in that which appears ordinary. By choosing asymmetrical compositions, excluding cars and people, I’m able to emphasize the common thread and refocus attention on the irony intrinsic to the modern world.
